Where is your matcha from?
Our matcha is sourced from Japan’s renowned tea growing regions, including Uji in Kyoto, Shizuoka, and Kagoshima. Each region has its own unique climate, soil, and tea growing traditions, which can influence the flavor and character of the tea.
We work with carefully selected Japanese farms to bring you matcha made with traditional Japanese craftsmanship and a deep respect for the tea itself.
What does “ceremonial grade” mean?
“Ceremonial grade” is a marketing term rather than an officially regulated grading system for matcha. However, we believe the term should represent a higher standard of quality and craftsmanship.
When we use “ceremonial grade” at Maison Matcha, we mean matcha made from carefully selected, first harvest tea leaves that have been shade grown and traditionally processed and stone ground. It is intended to be enjoyed on its own, traditionally whisked with water, allowing the natural flavor, aroma, color, and texture of the tea to shine.
For us, ceremonial grade is not simply a label. It represents the care taken throughout the entire process, from how the tea is grown and harvested to how it is processed and prepared for you to enjoy.
How is your matcha harvested?
Our matcha is made using traditional Japanese tea growing and production methods. The tea plants are shade grown before harvest, which helps preserve the qualities that make matcha so distinctive. Our matcha is made from first harvest tea, known as Ichibancha, and is carefully harvested before being steamed, dried, and stone ground into an exceptionally fine powder.
These traditional methods require time, care, and craftsmanship at every stage, from the tea fields to the final powder.
Where are you based?
Maison Matcha is an online store based in the United States. Our business operates from Boston, MA.
Our founder is from Boston, and Maison Matcha was created as a small, independent business with a love for Japanese tea and the simple joys of making matcha.
Is your matcha organic?
Yes. Our 80g Ceremonial Matcha and 80g Hojicha are USDA Organic certified.
Our 30g Premium Matcha is JAS certified organic in Japan and is currently in the process of being registered for USDA Organic certification in the United States.
We believe in being transparent about where our products come from and how they are made, which is why we work with certified producers and maintain careful sourcing standards.
Does matcha contain caffeine?
Yes, matcha naturally contains caffeine. A typical serving of matcha contains approximately 30 to 70 mg of caffeine, depending on the amount used and the particular tea.
Unlike coffee, matcha also naturally contains L theanine, an amino acid that is associated with a calmer, more sustained feeling of alertness. Because of this combination, many people find matcha to provide a smoother energy experience than coffee, although everyone's response to caffeine is different.
Does hojicha contain caffeine?
Yes, hojicha naturally contains caffeine, but generally much less than matcha. A typical serving contains approximately 10 to 20 mg of caffeine, depending on how it is prepared.
Hojicha is made by roasting Japanese green tea, creating its signature warm, nutty, and toasty flavor. Its lower caffeine content makes it a popular choice for those looking for a gentler tea experience.
How much matcha should I use for a matcha latte?
For a full matcha latte, we recommend 3–4g of matcha for a rich, smooth, and flavorful cup.
Our nutrition label lists 1–2g as the serving size, but we recommend using more for a latte, especially when pairing matcha with milk. Start with 3g and adjust to your preferred strength.
For the best texture, whisk the matcha with a small amount of warm water until smooth and frothy, then add your milk of choice.
What is ichigo ichie?
Ichigo Ichie is a Japanese expression that can be translated as “one time, one meeting.” It reflects the idea that each moment is unique and will never happen in exactly the same way again.
This philosophy is at the heart of Maison Matcha. For us, matcha is more than a drink. It is an invitation to slow down, be present, and appreciate the simple moments that make up our everyday lives.
At Maison Matcha, we believe in finding joy in the simple moments of everyday life. The art of making matcha invites us to slow down, be present, and appreciate the beauty in a simple ritual.
What is the difference between the Ceremonial and Premium pouches?
Our 80g Organic Ceremonial Matcha is a carefully crafted blend of Japanese matcha from multiple renowned growing regions. It features a blend of cultivars, including Yabukita and Okimidori, creating a smooth, balanced cup with a fresh vegetal character, gentle umami, and natural sweetness. It offers the classic matcha experience and is delicious enjoyed traditionally or in a latte.
Our 30g Premium Tokimidori Matcha is a single region, single cultivar matcha, sourced exclusively from Shizuoka and made from the Tokimidori cultivar. With a richer, creamier character and subtle nutty notes, it has a smooth natural sweetness that makes it especially delicious in lattes.
Both are smooth and naturally sweet, but they offer different expressions of Japanese matcha. The 80g is a carefully balanced blend, while the 30g allows the distinct character of one region and one cultivar to shine.
